Six

by sula36 @ 2008-02-28 - 23:06:34

Ok, Kev Wilson challenged me to name my 6 life changing decisions so here goes:

1. Deciding to leave school at 16
2. Deciding to leave home at 18
3. Training as an Accountant
4. getting married
5. having the children
6. Moving to Switzerland

pretty easy actually.

But what about the life changing decisions still to be made? There are some, and I will be making them, so maybe we cannot sum up our lives to 6 decisions, or maybe some decisions have less of an affect with time.

A week on the slopes 2

by sula36 @ 2008-02-27 - 21:01:27

The week in Saas Fee was just what I needed. A total break from work, no internet, no emails, doing something physical and loads of sunshine too.
We travelled the whole way on public transport. Unfortunately we were not the only ones with this idea, and the train was heaving. We sat on the steps, with all luggage piled in the doorway. This did mean that in Visp someone had to climb over the luggage so we could all get out:DD

Our Chalet was totally charming, very Swiss, with snow piled around it. But lovely and warm, and lots of space for all us 8, and no neighbours to annoy. Plus the bus stop was literally outside the door, so that was very handy.
On the Sunday morning we all had private lessons. The grown ups with Edi, who was great, and the younger children with Celina, who was also great with them. It certainly helped us get our snow legs back again.
Then we signed up for 2 to 3 days ski school, all except Rennie my brother in law, who is a natural on skis. He spent the next days skiing every run in the resort, while we had our lessons in the morning. My instructor was very dishy. David from England, very fit ;) but young enough to be my son!!!!
We skied every day, and did the apres ski in the chalet every evening, and the week went both quickly and slowly. A bit strange really.

So now I am back at work, and the weather is changing. Friday was meant to be the works ski day, but the weather forecast is dire, so that is postponed. And at the weekend I am doing a Church fundraiser, and then I must go to the gym, really, really

A week on the slopes

by sula36 @ 2008-02-14 - 22:19:47

We are off on our ski holidays in just a day or so. Saas Fee is a resort in the Wallis part of Switzerland, with great snow conditions, as it is so high, and no cars allowed. We have decided that we will let the train take the strain, and tonight deposited all skis and a case full of ski boots at the railway station for them to take them ahead of us. Just Fr10 per piece. What a bargain.

My husbands brother and family are joining us from the UK, and we are taking a chalet for 8, which will be fun ( I hope ;))
On Sunday we are having a private lesson, and then we will think about classes. To be honest I can't be bothered to get up every morning to get to ski school for 10am, but as everyone else is getting up, maybe I will join in. I want this to be a relaxing time as well though, so might not hit the slopes everyday.

Yesterday was my nephews birthday, and so I will give him his present when he joins us on Saturday. Lots of Euro08 goodies, as he likes football and we are one of the host nations, even if England didn't get through :>

Now I will duck off and hide, and see you all in a week

Next stop the Jungfraujoch

by sula36 @ 2008-02-06 - 19:47:35

The Jungfraujoch is a beautiful mountain with glacier in the Bernese Oberland. It has the highest railway station in Europe at 3454m above sea level. Up there is a restaurant, gift shop and ice caves.
It is a very popular tourist attraction, and to me part of the attraction is the train journey. The train trundles up there and takes about 1 hour 40 minutes.

Apparently this is too long for the tourists on a whistle stop tour of Europe, and the idea has been put forward to build a lift up to the top. From 850m above sea level to the top in 20 minutes! It is estimated to cost about 160 -200 million francs to build, and will generate revenues of 40 Mio Francs per year.
So they reckon.

personally I reckon, if it was ever built, then it would generate a lot of sick people. 20 Minutes to reach that altitude would have incredible effects on the body. I don't think that people would enjoy it once they staggered out at the top. Then of course there is the environmental impact, and the fact that these cost estimates always overrun.

This is a serious suggestion from the Jungfrau region, and they are now checking potential ill effects. There is mounting resistance as well however, so hopefully this will be one of those eccentric ideas that literally never make it off the ground
